The future of Energy Disputes: The Energy Charter Treaty, between Constitutional and Geopolitical Autonomy?

EDRS and Ghent University are pleased to co-organise a panel discussion on the future of The Energy Charter Treaty, and therefore on the future of energy disputes across Europe. The panel will discuss the implications of the modernization process on the EU's ability to meet its environmental objectives, the possibilities for terminating or withdrawal from the treaty, and whether its termination would hinder the EU's geostrategic interests in energy  security.

SUMMARY of 6 June 2024 Panel discussion on "The EU Green Deal and Fora for Climate Dispute Resolution"


The European Dispute Resolution Society (“EDRS”) is an independent not-for-profit organization which aims to bring together academics, practitioners and policy-makers for debates on topical discussions and developments related to dispute resolution in, with and by the European Union and its Member States, in the broadest sense.

 

It organised a first event on 6 June 2024 on the topic of “The EU Green Deal and Fora for Climate Dispute Resolution”.


On behalf of the EDRS, Dr Herman Verbist (EDRS Executive Committee Member; attorney with Everest Attorneys) welcomed the more than 50 attendants.

Mr Karl Falkenberg (Former Director General of DG Environment of the European Commission and President of the Cub of Rome-EU Chapter) delivered a keynote speech on “The development of the EU Green Deal policy and Climate Dispute Resolution”.

Dr. Michael De Boeck (EDRS Executive Committee member; attorney with Acquis) was moderator of a panel discussion on topical issues relating to dispute resolution and the EU Green Deal with the following speakers : Ms. Josephine Norris (Legal service of the European Commission; Adjunct professor, Brussels School of Governance), Ms. Isabelle Van Damme  (Partner, Van Bael & Bellis; Visiting Professor, College of Bruges) and Ms. Anaïs Berthier (Head of Client Earth, Brussels).


The attendants were able to participate in the discussion with the Q&A after the panel discussion.


The event was hosted by the Acquis law office in Brussels.
